Dog Sanctuary in Upperco, Maryland

Some dogs should never have to start over again. Our sanctuary dogs live out their lives here in Upperco, with food, care and people who understand them.

Who sanctuary is for

Sanctuary is for dogs who can’t be safely or fairly rehomed: dogs with ongoing medical conditions, dogs of advanced age for whom another move would be too hard, dogs with a bite history or special handling needs, and dogs whose rehabilitation will take far longer than a typical foster stay.

For those dogs, sanctuary means a stable routine, proper medical care and the chance to enjoy their days, for as long as they live.

Sanctuary space is very limited and isn’t available on request. Most sanctuary dogs come to us through our own rescue and rehabilitation work.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sanctuary dog?

A sanctuary dog stays in permanent or long-term care because traditional adoption would not be safe or appropriate for them, often because of medical needs, age, behavior history, bite history or special handling requirements. Sanctuary is a commitment to give them a good life anyway. Learn about sanctuary care.

Why can’t every dog be adopted?

Some dogs have ongoing medical conditions, a bite history, special handling needs or simply need more time. Placing them in a home that can’t meet those needs would put the dog and the family at risk. For these dogs, a stable sanctuary home is the safest, kindest option.

Can I sponsor a specific dog?

Yes. When you sponsor, you can choose a specific dog or support the rescue wherever the need is greatest.

Where does my sponsorship money go?

Sponsorships support Petey’s Promise’s overall rescue and sanctuary work: veterinary care, food, medication, training and rehabilitation, safe housing, transportation, enrichment and emergency treatment. Funds may be used where the need is greatest.
