A Home for Life

For some dogs, the safest, kindest outcome isn’t a new family. It’s a permanent place where they are understood, cared for and never asked to start over.

What Sanctuary Means

Sanctuary is permanent or long-term care for dogs who can’t safely be adopted. They live with a predictable routine, people who know them well, and everything a loved dog should have: good food, comfortable rest, exercise, enrichment and medical care.

A sanctuary dog isn’t waiting to be placed. They live here, on a routine that suits them.

Why Some Dogs Cannot Be Rehomed

  • Ongoing medical conditions that need daily management
  • Advanced age, when another move would cause real distress
  • Behavioral histories that need experienced handling
  • A bite history that makes placement unsafe for a family
  • Special handling requirements
  • Rehabilitation that takes far longer than a typical foster stay

Sponsor a Sanctuary Resident

Their care never ends, so support matters most here

A sanctuary dog doesn’t get adopted out, which means their costs continue for the rest of their life. Monthly sponsors make it possible to keep that promise responsibly.

  • $15 a month helps with everyday supplies
  • $50 a month helps with medical and nutritional needs
  • $250 a month as a Guardian Angel supports veterinary, housing and daily care
  • Prefer to give items? Shop the Wish List

Sponsorship contributions support Petey’s Promise’s overall rescue and sanctuary mission and may be used where the need is greatest. Sponsoring a dog does not necessarily mean the sponsor is covering that dog’s complete expenses.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sanctuary dog?

A sanctuary dog stays in permanent or long-term care because traditional adoption would not be safe or appropriate for them, often because of medical needs, age, behavior history, bite history or special handling requirements. Sanctuary is a commitment to give them a good life anyway. Learn about sanctuary care.

Why can’t every dog be adopted?

Some dogs have ongoing medical conditions, a bite history, special handling needs or simply need more time. Placing them in a home that can’t meet those needs would put the dog and the family at risk. For these dogs, a stable sanctuary home is the safest, kindest option.

Can I sponsor a specific dog?

Yes. When you sponsor, you can choose a specific dog or support the rescue wherever the need is greatest.

Where does my sponsorship money go?

Sponsorships support Petey’s Promise’s overall rescue and sanctuary work: veterinary care, food, medication, training and rehabilitation, safe housing, transportation, enrichment and emergency treatment. Funds may be used where the need is greatest.
