His Story

Ricky was a stray in Texas. Nobody knows for certain how long he was on his own, or exactly what he went through out there. What we do know is that at some point, someone shot him, and the bullet went through his shoulder.

A dog in that situation has very few options. Hurt, alone and living on the streets, he needed someone to notice him and decide he was worth helping.

From the Streets to Safety

Someone did. Ricky was rescued and brought into care, and the long trip from the streets of Texas ended somewhere safe, with people looking out for him.

Ricky’s story is exactly why Petey’s Promise exists: a dog nobody was looking out for, who needed someone in his corner.

His Recovery

Coming into care meant Ricky could finally get what he had been missing: safety, food, rest and attention to his injury. More detail about his recovery will be shared here as Lyndsey approves it.

Awaiting details

Ricky’s rescue date, breed, age and medical details have not been shared yet. They will be added once Lyndsey confirms them.

Life Today

Look at his photos and you can see it: Ricky is a happy, friendly boy who is full of personality. The dog who once had nowhere safe to sleep now has a cot of his own and people who know his name.

Ricky is currently listed as adoptable. If you think your home could be the right fit, send an adoption inquiry and we will talk honestly about whether it’s a match.

Help Dogs Like Ricky

Our mission is to help dogs like Ricky, who are on the streets or in shelters fighting for their life, get the essentials they need to live a good life.

Ricky made it because someone stepped in. Your support helps Petey’s Promise do the same for the next dog: see how our rescue program works, sponsor Ricky, or become a monthly supporter. You can also read Saving Ricky, his full story.

Sponsorship contributions support Petey’s Promise’s overall rescue and sanctuary mission and may be used where the need is greatest. Sponsoring a dog does not necessarily mean the sponsor is covering that dog’s complete expenses.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sanctuary dog?

A sanctuary dog stays in permanent or long-term care because traditional adoption would not be safe or appropriate for them, often because of medical needs, age, behavior history, bite history or special handling requirements. Sanctuary is a commitment to give them a good life anyway. Learn about sanctuary care.

Why can’t every dog be adopted?

Some dogs have ongoing medical conditions, a bite history, special handling needs or simply need more time. Placing them in a home that can’t meet those needs would put the dog and the family at risk. For these dogs, a stable sanctuary home is the safest, kindest option.

Can I sponsor a specific dog?

Yes. When you sponsor, you can choose a specific dog or support the rescue wherever the need is greatest.

Can I adopt a dog?

Only dogs specifically listed as adoptable are available for adoption. Sanctuary residents are not.
