Sanctuary Dogs

Sanctuary dogs stay in permanent or long-term care because a traditional adoption would not be safe or appropriate for them. They are not unwanted. They are the dogs we have promised never to give up on.

Resident profiles are being prepared

Each sanctuary dog will get a full profile with their story, needs and updates once Lyndsey has approved what to share. To hear who is in sanctuary care right now, call (443) 377-6919.

Why sanctuary

Why some dogs stay for life

The reasons are different for every dog. What they share is a need for more than an ordinary home can safely offer.

Behavioral limitations

Some dogs are anxious, reactive or easily overwhelmed. They do best with a predictable routine and handlers who know them.

Medical conditions

Chronic illness or injury can require daily medication, monitoring and frequent vet visits.

Age

For a senior dog, another move can be harder than the comfort it promises. Stability is a gift.

Bite history

When a dog has bitten, rehoming can put people and the dog at risk. Sanctuary keeps everyone safe.

Special handling

Some dogs need specific equipment, experienced handlers or careful management around other animals.

Long-term care

Some rehabilitation takes years, not weeks, and some dogs simply need a forever place to land.

A commitment

What sanctuary dogs get

Good food, a comfortable bed, medical care, exercise, things to do, and the same people looking after them every day. Most will stay with us for the rest of their lives.

Because these dogs never “move on,” their costs never stop. That’s why monthly supporters matter so much to them.

Help a sanctuary dog

Sponsorship contributions support Petey’s Promise’s overall rescue and sanctuary mission and may be used where the need is greatest. Sponsoring a dog does not necessarily mean the sponsor is covering that dog’s complete expenses.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sanctuary dog?

A sanctuary dog stays in permanent or long-term care because traditional adoption would not be safe or appropriate for them, often because of medical needs, age, behavior history, bite history or special handling requirements. Sanctuary is a commitment to give them a good life anyway. Learn about sanctuary care.

Why can’t every dog be adopted?

Some dogs have ongoing medical conditions, a bite history, special handling needs or simply need more time. Placing them in a home that can’t meet those needs would put the dog and the family at risk. For these dogs, a stable sanctuary home is the safest, kindest option.

Can I sponsor a specific dog?

Yes. When you sponsor, you can choose a specific dog or support the rescue wherever the need is greatest.

Can I adopt a dog?

Only dogs specifically listed as adoptable are available for adoption. Sanctuary residents are not.
