From Intake to Stability
Rescue starts the moment a dog comes into our care. Here is what happens next, step by step, before a dog is ready for adoption or a home in sanctuary.
Six steps every rescue dog goes through
Every dog is different, so the timeline is too. Some dogs move through these steps in weeks. Others need months, and some discover along the way that sanctuary is where they belong.
Capacity is limited, so we can’t promise intake for every dog. If you know of a dog in need, contact us with details.
Intake
The dog comes into care. We record what we know about where they came from, their history and any immediate concerns.
Immediate Needs
Food, water, a safe space, rest and decompression. Urgent injuries are treated right away.
Veterinary Evaluation
An exam, vaccines, parasite treatment and diagnostics as needed, plus a plan for any ongoing conditions.
Behavioral Evaluation
Once the dog has settled, we look at how they respond to people, handling, other dogs and new situations.
Rehabilitation
Medical recovery plus structure, training and confidence building. See Rehabilitation.
Adoption or Sanctuary
Dogs who are ready are matched with the right family. Dogs who can’t be safely rehomed stay in sanctuary care.

Ricky’s rescue
Ricky, also called Ricochet, was living on the streets of Texas with a gunshot wound through his shoulder. He was rescued and brought into care, and today he is safe and listed as adoptable.
Our mission is to help dogs like Ricky, who are on the streets or in shelters fighting for their life, get the essentials they need to live a good life.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Petey’s Promise?
Petey’s Promise is a dog rescue and sanctuary effort growing out of Lyndsey Morgan’s rescue work with Obedient BLUE. It helps homeless, abandoned, medically or behaviorally challenged, senior and sanctuary dogs get food, veterinary care, rehabilitation, training, shelter and long-term support. Read our mission.
Can I surrender a dog?
We can’t promise intake. Space, resources and each dog’s needs determine what we can take on. Please contact us with details about the dog and your situation, or call (443) 377-6919, and we’ll respond as soon as we can.
Can I adopt a dog?
Only dogs specifically listed as adoptable are available for adoption. Sanctuary residents are not.
Where does my sponsorship money go?
Sponsorships support Petey’s Promise’s overall rescue and sanctuary work: veterinary care, food, medication, training and rehabilitation, safe housing, transportation, enrichment and emergency treatment. Funds may be used where the need is greatest.
